Jason highlighted the income cell on the laptop screen and pressed the delete key.
The zero appeared in bold black font, erasing my entire monthly salary from the household budget spreadsheet.
“We need to streamline our financial deliverables before the girls arrive,” Jason said.
He tapped his unlocked smartphone against his knuckles. The steady rhythm echoed against the granite kitchen island.
I stared at the screen. As a senior financial analyst, my brain automatically calculated the massive deficit he just created.
We were instantly losing sixty percent of our monthly cash flow. I watched the projected savings cell drop straight into the red.
“The girls are scheduled for induction on November twelve,” I said. “That gives us exactly four weeks. We have a mortgage to pay on this condo. The association fees are due on the first of every month.”
“Focus on being a full time mom and let me handle the finances,” Jason said.
He scrolled down to the expected expenses column and typed in one thousand two hundred and fifty dollars.
“What is that massive charge?” I asked.
“The specialized twin stroller.”
“We absolutely cannot afford a luxury stroller that costs twelve hundred dollars if you zero out my salary. We need that cash reserve for the hospital copays.”
He tapped the phone against his knuckles again, his jaw tightening.
“I am restructuring our capital allocation. You just need to trust my leadership on this.”
He looked over at the hallway leading to the spare room.
“And we need to clear out the condo office,” Jason said. “Your framed college diplomas take up entirely too much shelf space. We need that wall for bulk diaper storage.”
“My degrees have hung in that room since the day I moved in.”
“They are just pieces of paper, Audrey. We are pivoting to a family focused paradigm.”
He leaned across the island and demanded I have a formal resignation letter drafted for my firm by Friday.
I looked at the stainless steel smudge on the brand new refrigerator door behind him and said nothing.
What was his actual financial plan for when the twins arrived?
