What’s Hiding Beside This Path?

You’re walking an old railroad bed or a faint trail in the woods when you see it: a small, lonely concrete post stamped with “R/W” or “SRD.” It doesn’t look like much, but it quietly declares, “A road once lived here.” Long after the pavement has crumbled, the signs rusted away, and local memory faded, this right-of-way marker still does its job, marking the legal edge of a road that no longer exists.

Once you recognize one, the landscape changes. Subtle depressions, slight rises, bits of gravel in the soil stop being random. They line up into a planned route, a daily path people once drove without thinking. That’s why these markers feel so powerful: they prove that history isn’t only grand courthouses and iron bridges. Sometimes it’s a single concrete stake, still standing, quietly insisting that what was once ordinary was also important.
